Faculty Mary Fridley and Marian Rich reprised their popular performatory workshop, Laughing Matters: The World Ain’t as Funny as It Used to Be (That’s why we have to keep laughing!) with about 30 participants, who spent a few hours engaged in pointless play, philosophical conversation, watching videos of comedic greats and performing improvised skits. Alongside Rich (an ace improv comedy performer), participants created scenes directed by Fridley that were based on all kinds of life situations — some treading close to the edge of what might be considered ‘off-limits’ — such as having cancer or suffering from depression.
Said Rich, “We want to find ways to help people create humor socially as we share our fears and upset about all the difficult things we encounter in the world.”
Adds Fridley, “We can all get better at creating environments where we can bring some humor to whatever life throws at us. This capacity, I believe, is critical to our development, not to mention to our collective sanity.”
